Small-leaved Elm is a small deciduous, richly branched tree up to about 3 m high. Originally homed in the Mediterranean, it grows in milder climates in woods, shrubberies and other habitats. It is also found in riverside forests along the major European streams but endangered by elm disease. Leaves are oval, serrate and always asymmetric. Flowers are in small lateral clusters, bisexual and anemophilous. Flowering time is February to April, before leaf bud break. Each fruit is surrounded by a broad wing.Urtica dioica

Common nettle grows on widespread and often abundant inmany habitats, especially on nutrient-rich soils. It is a perennial, dioeceous (hence the Latin name!), vigorous erect coarse herb with stinging hairs both on the stalk and the leaves. Its leaves are ovate-cordate and stalked. Flowers appear in long green narrow catkins from June to October and are wind pollinated.
