Situation and medium-term forecast

Currently high fungal spore concentrations and soon the mugwort pollen season will begin!

All over Austria, the weather forecast promises changeable conditions with thunderstorms, rainfalls, and sunny phases. These weather conditions keep the pollen concentrations in check and on a low to moderate level.

In the valleys and lowlands of Austria, only the late-blooming grasses remain flowering. Due to the delayed flowering sequence at higher elevations, flowering grasses may still be encountered on meadows. Also, in forests and at their edges higher pollen concentrations may locally occur. Pollen allergy sufferers sensitized to grass pollen should avoid these areas.

Corn continues flowering in the agricultural region of Austria. Corn pollen is relatively large and heavy. Therefore, it does not remain airborne for long distances. Grass pollen allergy sufferers should avoid the vicinity of flowering cornfields.

On meadows and in green areas, plantain continues flowering. Its pollen may intensify the allergenic burden.

Nettle pollen concentrations remain on a high level. Luckily its pollen is only of low allergenic importance.

The widespread start of the mugwort flowering period has not yet arrived in the eastern parts of Austria. Already, a few specimens are in flower. Near these early bloomers, pollen allergy sufferers sensitized to mugwort may experience an allergenic burden.

The humid and warm weather has been beneficial for the fungal spore production. Therefore, high fungal spore concentrations have to be expected for this weekend. The fungal spore concentrations decrease during rainfalls but will return to high levels in sunny phases after the rain.

What else: The pollen spectrum contains pollen from Mercurialis, cypresses and the goosefoot family in addition, which is of low allergological importance.
