in Eurasia, Central and North America and North Africa in temperate and subtropical regions (also in the mountains in the tropics)

Appearance:

deciduous (rarely evergreen) trees or shrubs, major species diversity, opposite leaves, palmately lobed leaf blade, leaf margin is smooth or serrated, many species exhibit intense autumn colouring of the foliage, flowers in large inflorescences, individual flowers radially symmetrical, schizocarpic fruit (winged nuts) with a special aerodynamic form that causes autorotation when it drops

Allergenicity:

low, also important in the context of food allergy (honey, syrup)
