Appearance:
deciduous trees or shrubs, leaves are irregular with a doubly serrated leaf margin, drooping catkins (male flowers, resemble those of the hazel), the female inflorescences are located terminally on the branches in individual pendulous, bunched clusters (similar to those of hops, hence the name), small fruit (nuts) are often winged
Allergenicity:
cross-reaction as a result of the relationship to other plants of the birch family
