Distribution:
native to the northern hemisphere, in particular, prefers humid cool climatic zones, but many species also colonise subtropical and tropical areas, pioneer plant
Appearance:
coniferous trees, rarely shrubs, leaves in needle form, needles do not generally grow alone but in bundles, pollen cones grow in a spiral arrangement and range from elongated ovate to cylindrical, female cones are stalked
Allergenicity:
low, but may cause a feeling as of a foreign body in the eye
