Distribution:

in both Old and New World, generally in temperate to subtropical climates of the northern hemisphere

Appearance:

deciduous trees or shrubs, leaves alternate and odd-pinnate, the leaves smell and are large, the leaf margin may be serrated or entire, male drooping catkins have no stalk, female flowers are clustered in large numbers in a spike, the furrowed nut is surrounded by a thick outer jacket and a woody nutshell

Allergenicity:

low, however the nuts are important in the context of food allergies
