Situation and medium-term forecast

The peak of the grass pollen season has passed!

Changeable weather conditions are expected for the second half of the week as well. However, the temperatures will remain at a relatively high level. Most of the widespread grass species have passed their peak pollination period, especially in the lowlands and valleys of Austria. At higher elevations the vegetation period is shifted a little so burden will still reach higher levels there.

Remark: A weather situation like the current one may leads to a particular burden, because pollen could burst open during thunderstorms and release free allergen into the air.

Rye grass, feather reed, couch grass, fescue grasses, false bromes, wood bluegrass and timothy grass are still responsible for the majority of grass pollen in the ambient air. Dock and plantain may increase the allergenic burden even further.

Sweet chestnut is still flowering and causing allergenic burden due to cross reaction, especially for pollen allergy sufferers that are sensitized to birch pollen.

The flowering period of green alder is slowly ending but it will still cause allergenic burden in higher elevated regions and areas of growth. However, these plants have already past their peak flowering period so pollen will not reach relevant concentrations in the valleys and lowlands anymore.

Due to the rainfalls of the past days, fungal spore development will be accelerated and result in moderate to high burden throughout the next days.

What else: The pollen spectrum contains pollen of elderflower, nettle, tree of heaven, linden, goosefoot family, mercuries, cypresses and yews.
