Situation and medium-term forecast

Mugwort has started flowering!

All over Austria the weather conditions will remain changeable. The rainfalls will keep the pollen concentrations on a low level.

In Burgenland, Carinthia, lower Austria, Styria, and Vienna, mugwort has started flowering. The rainfalls have kept its pollen concentrations on low to moderate levels. In the eastern parts of Austria, moderate to high pollen levels may be possible during sunny periods.

Over the weekend, the first flowering ragweed specimens were reported from Burgenland. Due to the high allergenicity of its pollen, sensitive pollen allergy sufferers may already experience a first allergenic burden.

The late-blooming grasses remain flowering in the Austrian lowlands. Due to the delayed flowering sequence at higher elevations, flowering grasses may still be encountered on meadows. Also, in forests and at their edges higher pollen concentrations may locally occur. Pollen allergy sufferers sensitized to grass pollen should avoid these areas.

In the agricultural regions of Austria, corn remains flowering. Corn pollen is relatively large and heavy. Therefore, it does not remain airborne for long distances. Grass pollen allergy sufferers should avoid the vicinity of flowering cornfields.

On meadows and in green areas, plantain continues flowering. Its pollen may intensify the allergenic burden.

The nettle pollen concentrations are currently reaching moderate levels. Luckily its pollen is only of low allergenic importance.

The humid and warm weather has been beneficial for the fungal spore production. Therefore, moderate to high fungal spore concentrations have to be expected for the coming days. The fungal spore concentrations decrease during rainfalls but will return to high levels in sunny phases after the rain.

What else: The pollen spectrum contains pollen from Mercurialis, cypresses and the goosefoot family in addition, which is of low allergological importance.
