Situation and medium-term forecast

First grasses are reaching the readiness to flower!

On Thursday and Friday, the weather in Austria is strongly affected by a cold front. This results in reduced pollination during these days. For the weekend more favorable conditions are expected which accelerate plant development and therefore results in increasing pollen concentrations.

At some areas the fast developing grasses like foxtail grass reached readiness to flower and may already cause low local allergenic burden. Larger areas will be affected by allergenic burden once meadow grass and orchard grass start flowering but this will still take some time. According to our forecasting model the majority of grasses will reach readiness to flower in the mid of May.

The intensity of burden caused by birch pollen is steadily decreasing and the only low to moderate burden has to be expected. At higher altitudes moderate burden is still expected more frequently but in general the birch pollen season is slowly coming to an end.

Pollen of oak and beech may cause allergenic burden for some birch pollen allergy sufferers due to cross reaction. This is also the case for the pollen of hornbeam and hop hornbeam, but their flowering period has already ended.

At higher altitudes the green alder starts its flowering period. Depending on the wind direction pollen can be transported into the lowlands and valleys where it might cause low allergenic burden for a short period of time.

Plane tree has passed its peak pollination period. Allergenic burden still has to be expected in cities or close to avenues of plane trees.

What else: The pollen spectrum contains pollen from fir, spruce, horse chestnut, yews, cypresses, ginkgo, walnut, maple, willow, mulberry, rush and sedges in addition, which is of a low allergological importance.

Note: The model results give an indication of the expected start of flowering, based on information provided by local pollen warning services with direct reference to the local situation. Readiness to flowering is not equal to the beginning of the pollen season. When the start of flowering is achieved, most of the plants can release pollen, but only when weather conditions are favourable.
